How a Fractional Chief of Staff Is Different from Other Support Roles

I’m often asked: ‘How is a Fractional Chief of Staff different from an OBM, business coach, or consultant?’ Here’s a clear comparison of what each role does, what they don’t do, and the gap each leaves. You can expand multiple sections to compare roles.

What Clients Say

“Moriah and her team at Vibe High are nothing less than absolute rock stars. Before working with Moriah, my business grew faster than I could keep up with inefficient systems and processes. She has helped dial my business operation in so that I now have more free time for strategic thinking and business expansion. She is also a trusted advisor and brilliant thought partner. She does this all while holding me accountable and challenging me to think big and push my comfort zone. I am so grateful to have Moriah as my right-hand woman!”
— Massimo Backus
Leadership Coach + Author of Human First, Leader Second

My business continues to grow and I’m able to execute on my big crazy ideas thanks to Moriah’s support. I hired her as I know how key having accountability is. I also wanted someone who could help break down my huge goals in a way that they could actually be executed on. She’s awesome at both of those things. She won’t only keep you on track with the tasks that you need/want to get done as a business owner and coach, but she’s a master at fleshing out your wild ideas into tangible pieces so you can bring them to life. Having Moriah on your side is like having a second brain. One that allows you to achieve the big things you’re after without the overwhelm.

As an independent transformation management expert, I need someone who helps me stay disciplined and focused… and I am grateful that Moriah agreed to work with me. Moriah keeps me on my toes—in the best way. She helps me get things done, find solutions, and overcome self-imposed roadblocks. Moriah is very pragmatic, always constructive and an eternal optimist (but not one of the annoying kinds). When I overcomplicate things and attempt to work on four projects at once, she helps me prioritize and engage in big-picture thinking. I benefit a lot from her project management experience and her ability to see the forest for the trees.

A Little About Me

I’m Moriah Bacus, and I’ve spent 25+ years in professional roles spanning small to medium-sized businesses and nonprofits – including early experience at Fortune 500 companies like Dell and IBM. During that time, I’ve specialized in project management for 15+ years, with deep expertise in event management, marketing, human resources, and operations.
Since 2021, I’ve supported clients as a Fractional Chief of Staff in both long-term partnerships and intensive short-term engagements. Clients like Massimo Backus, Ambrose Wilson-Brown, and Farah Hussain describe me as a trusted thought partner and strategic integrator who brings calm, structure, and momentum to complex visions.

What I bring to the table
I excel at soundboarding, asking the right questions, and connecting dots others miss. I’ve worked across coaching and consulting, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, association management, real estate, construction, manufacturing, and technology – giving me pattern recognition that translates across industries and the ability to see both the big picture and the details that make execution possible.

My approach
I help you bridge the gap between vision and reality. I zoom out to see your whole ecosystem, then help you flesh out the projects, timelines, and systems that bring your biggest ideas to life. I remove roadblocks, identify what’s missing, and ensure your systems, team, and operations finally move in sync.

What makes my work distinctive
I’m a 3/5 Projector in Human Design, which means I’m energetically designed for guiding and strategic wisdom – not doing all the things myself. This aligns perfectly with how I work: seeing what others can’t see, asking questions that shift perspective, and coordinating execution without needing to control every detail.
I bring a collaborative, no-nonsense approach to everything I do. No judgment, no pretense – just genuine partnership focused on making your vision real.

My superpower
Taking your complex vision and breaking it into manageable, actionable steps – and then coordinating execution so things actually happen.
I help you gain clarity on what matters most, build capacity to achieve it, and create continuity so progress doesn’t stall – then stay embedded to coordinate execution.

Frequently Asked Questions

An Online Business Manager manages your operations and team day-to-day. They’re excellent at execution and running systems.

I work at the strategic level – thought partnership, priority setting, decision support, and coordinating your most important initiatives. I manage 1-2 strategic projects, not all your operations.

You might need both: An OBM to run operations + a Fractional CoS for strategic partnership. They work beautifully together.

No, but you need to have some operational foundation and at least 1-2 team members.

If you have zero systems and no team, you likely need an OBM or integrator first to build that operational foundation. Once that’s in place, adding a strategic layer (me) makes sense.

I optimize and document existing systems – I don’t build everything from scratch

For Strategic Partner package: Approximately 4-5 hours per month of your time (sessions, check-ins, async responses)

For Full Partnership: Approximately 6-7 hours per month

The rest of the time, I’m working independently on the strategic initiatives we’ve agreed upon – project managing, coordinating your team, preparing materials, etc.

You get the strategic thinking and coordination without having to do all the work yourself.

That’s exactly what our complimentary brainstorming call is for. We’ll explore:

  • Where you’re currently spending your time
  • What’s on your plate that shouldn’t be
  • What strategic priorities keep stalling
  • What support would make the biggest difference

Then I’ll recommend which package (if any) makes sense for your situation.

My primary focus is coaches and consultants because I deeply understand this business model and can add value quickly.

That said, I’ve worked across many sectors and can adapt to other service-based businesses if the fit is strong and you meet the other criteria (established business, existing team, strategic need).

I coordinate your team on the specific strategic initiatives I’m managing – not all their work.

For example, if I’m project managing your book launch, I’ll coordinate your designer, copywriter, and VA on that project. I run coordination meetings, track progress, identify blockers, and ensure everyone knows their part.

But I’m not managing their day-to-day work or being their boss. I’m coordinating them on your strategic priorities.

I don’t provide:

  • Full team management or daily operational oversight
  • Content creation or marketing execution
  • Day-to-day project management across all business initiatives
  • Technical implementation or design work
  • 24/7 availability or emergency support

If you need these things, you likely need an Online Business Manager, marketing manager, or tech specialist – which can work alongside my strategic support.

Perfect! I work beautifully alongside business coaches.

Your coach gives you strategic frameworks and guidance. I help you implement those insights in your actual business context – translating their advice into operational reality and coordinating execution.

Most of my clients have business coaches. I often prepare materials for their coaching sessions and help them implement what comes out of those conversations.

Strategic Partner clients: Average 6-12+ months, many ongoing for years

Full Partnership clients: Average 12+ months

Strategic Intensive clients: 2 weeks for the intensive itself; with option to convert to ongoing partnership afterward

Strategic work takes time to show results. That’s why monthly packages require a 3-month minimum – it gives us time to make real impact together.

The engagement becomes month-to-month. Either of us can end the partnership with 30 days notice – no hard feelings, no lengthy explanations needed.

My goal is work with people who value and benefit from this partnership. If that’s not happening, it’s better for both of us to acknowledge it and transition gracefully.

Let’s have an honest conversation about what’s possible

In 45 minutes, we’ll explore:

No pressure, no pitch – just a genuine conversation about whether we’re a good fit.

I only work with clients who are genuinely ready for strategic partnership. If we’re not a fit, I’ll tell you – and often refer you to someone who might be.
